Replacing the belt on the Famicom Disk System / Twin Famicom

If you have any rattle or motor noise when you insert the disk in the disk system and a error occurs,
there is a possibility that your belt is worn out. You can replace the belt very easly by the following steps.

Tools you need:
a set of screw drivers, L-end wrench and a needle-nose pliers

I'll be using the Twin Famicom AN-505 for introducing on how to replace the belt.
The same procedure can be taken on the Famicom Disk System (the red square one) also.

Disclamer: I will not take any responsibility of your Disk System or the Twin Famicom.

Flip over the Twin Famicom console, and unscrew the screws where it is circled.

After taking out the screws, flip it back over and take the top cover off. Be careful, there is a cable that is connected to the board. Gently pull the connector off from the board. (Only on AN-505)

Unscrew the four screws which is holding down the disk drive.

Pull out the drive
And pull off the connector gently.

Turn over the disk drive, and unscrew the screws that are circled.

Then take off the metal plate.
Unscrew the screws on the front panel of the disk drive.
Then the panel will pull off like shown.

Take off the spring that is holding the card holder.

I usually use a small negative screw driver to remove the springs.

There is one more spring on the opposite side.

Make sure you don't lose the springs.

Now to remove the card holder. Move the white lever and the card holder will move down.
Align the card holder to the shown spot by pressing the yellow eject button on the disk drive.
The head will be in the way for removing the card holder...
So lift up the head gently and remove the card holder. Make sure you don't lift the head too much, else it will brake off.
Now, you got the card holder off. The card holder has grease on it, so be careful not to touch it.
Free the wires.
Free this cable too.

Unscrew the eight screws circled.

Lift up the board. You will see the belt that is stretched out or melted.
Take a screw driver and lift up the trianguler plate. It will snap off.
Now that you have the triangular off...
Slide the triangular plate to the way the arrow points. Make sure there is a washer where it is circled.
Take the new belt and set is as shown in the picture.
Now to clean the gooey mess made by the old made. I usually use Q-tips and Zippo lighter fluid.
Drip few drops of the lighter fluid on to the Q-Tip, and clean the rollers.
Do the same with the other roller.Yes, I know it's a messy job getting your hands all black. This has to be the hardest part of replacing the belt.
After cleaning the rollers, take the triangular plate with the new belt and place it where it is shown in the picture.

Carefully slide the triangular plate and hook the belt on the small roller.

Take the other side of the belt, get it under the triangular plate and place it on the white roller.

Then hold the belt against the white roller and turn the roller to the direction the arrow shows.
Keep turning it...
Then the belt should go on properly. Make sure the belt isn't twisted.
Hold down the head and...
Snap the triangular plate back while holding down the head. You should keep the head where it is circled blue.
After you get the triangular plate back on, you put the board back. Make sure you align the micro switches (circled red) right. (Shown below)
The micro switches should appear where it is circled.
Put the screws back in.

Here comes the most important part.

First, slide the head so you will get a view like shown on the left.

Turn the gears to the direction the arrow shows.
Keep turning the gears until you get a view shown in left.
Now to adjust the head.
Take a L-end Wrench and unscrew the screw just a little.
Rotate the head with your fingers and pararell it as shown left. Tighten the screw back with the L-end wrench. Make sure you don't overtight the screw. Just tight enough so it doesn't move around.
Put back the card cover...
Put the spring back on with the screw driver like shown on left.
Put the front panel back on.
Put the cables to back where they were...
So as this one.
Put the screws back.
Connect the cable back to the disk drive.
Connect this cable back too...
Screw in the four screws,
Screw in the seven long screws,
Then you're done!
